The head of the Dassault empire announced 11 days ago in an interview with Le Figaro that negotiations to sell 24 Rafale fighters worth more than US$6 billion to a country he did not identify were at an advanced stage (it must be noted that the France’s leading conservative newspaper is owned by Dassault). In his accusation filed on Friday, Pollicita only omitted the request to question President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and other officials, a step that could be taken later if the case remains open. The complaint issued by a prosecutor critical of the Fernández de Kirchner administration is understandable and healthy for democracy, even if it displeases many Kirchnerites. On January 14, the AMIA special prosecutor Nisman accused the president, Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman and others of covering-up the alleged role of five Iranians in the terrorist attack that took place in 1994. By Sebastián Lacunza Editor-in-Chief Anyone paying only limited attention to the local news would have been able to foresee the reaction from the main political and media players as special prosecutor — the late Alberto Nisman presented his complaint against President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman and other ruling party activists for allegedly seeking to cover-up the responsibility of the 1994 AMIA Jewish community centre bombing. All of those predictable reactions surfaced immediately on that January 14. On the one hand, this was the charge: the president had orchestrated a “criminal conspiracy” with “terrorists” (in Nisman’s words) to provide impunity to those responsible for the death of 85 people, one of the worst possible charges in the Penal Code. Oradora siempre incisiva, la Presidenta argentina no ahorró críticas al negacionismo del Holocausto que enarbolaba su entonces par iraní, Mahmud Ahmadineyad. “Volverá, tal vez, a negar tragedias históricas que Occidente ha sufrido durante el siglo XX”, lanzó CFK ante la Asamblea General.
