By Sebastián Lacunza Editor-in-Chief Sebastián Lacunza on recent dramatic events Shortly after midnight on Sunday, January 18, a colleague asked me if “what the Herald journalist was saying was serious.” That is how I first heard about the now-famous tweet that Damián Pachter sent out into the world: “Alberto Nisman has been found in the bathroom of his Puerto Madero home in a pool of blood. He was not breathing.” I immediately contacted Pachter, a writer for the Buenos Aires Herald’s website, while his immediate editor did the same. We asked Pachter to write a short piece collecting the information while the two of us, alongside an editor from Ámbito.com and another from the Herald newspaper, attempted to confirm the news with other sources. When it was confirmed that the news was pretty much as the reporter had tweeted, we published a short article on the Herald’s website at around 2.30am — it goes without saying, accompanied by his byline. One of the dictatorship’s repressors, the intelligence agent Raúl Guglielminetti, was even part of the presidential security detail. Facing the difficult task of reconstructing democracy, Alfonsín did not know how to, did not want to, or wasn’t able to transform the State Intelligence Secretariat (SIDE, now the Intelligence Secretariat, SI). While Alfonsín’s government was surrounded by military mobs and multiple conspiracies, intelligence wolves were linked to kidnappings. Uno de los represores de la dictadura, el agente de Inteligencia Raúl Guglielminetti, llegó a ser custodia presidencial. En la difícil tarea de reconstruir la democracia, Alfonsín no supo, no quiso o no pudo transformar a la Secretaría de Inteligencia del Estado (SIDE, hoy SI). Mientras el gobierno de la UCR se veía acosado por asonadas militares y múltiples conspiraciones, lobos de Inteligencia aparecían vinculados a secuestros extorsivos. Pero, es cierto, esos mismos son los que debaten con vos en Facebook, o los leés, o te leen, o comparten una cerveza, o un llamado telefónico, o la vida. Luego se pone en juego la masividad de la tele, a favor y en contra. Y en un rincón no menor, la letrina tuitera, de la que paso. It’s a pity that Conti is thinking about attacking Nisman. Soccer rules say that a two-footed tackle is punishable with a red card and expulsion. If the opponent has a vulnerability, a better strategy is to keep calm until it becomes evident and then attack as strongly as possible within the rules of the game. Palabras certeras para definir el propósito de la célula de Al Qaeda que actuó en París, y que forma parte de un arrollador fanatismo que tiene entre sus víctimas, sobre todo, a los propios musulmanes.
